AIRCRAFT HISTORY

de Havilland D.H.89 Dragon Rapide. C/No 6676. G-AIYR

G-AIYR was built originally as a military Dominie navigation/radio trainer by the Brush Coachworks at Loughborough , and first flew in 1943 in RAF livery carrying the serial number HG 691. She was converted to civil use, and registered to the Aviation Company Reid and Sigrist on 26 Feb 1948, joining two other Rapides, G-AIYY and G-AIZI acquired by them early in 1947, all operating as survey aircraft. Later G-AIYR was purchased by Westward Airways to join their other ex-BEA Rapides, until 1979 operating pleasure flights around the Isles of Scilly from St. Just's airfield at Lands End. In 1980, G-AIYR made the headlines, and was flown to Capetown and back, commemorating Sir Alan Cobham's trail blazing flight of 1925/26.

In 1982 she was completely overhauled by British Aerospace to as-new condition, and is now based at Duxford Airfield in Cambridgshire, and operated by Classic Wings, a subsidiary of Clacton Aero Club, who fly her on nostalgic pleasure flights.
