AIRCRAFT HISTORY

De Havilland D.H. 89A Dragon Rapide. Constructors No.6810. G-AHKU Cecil John Rhodes

Between 1947 and 1964, British European Airways operated a fleet of 45 'Islander' class Rapides on domestic routes within the United Kingdom, flying short haul routes between the mainland, the Scottish Islands, the Channel Islands and the Isles of Scilly. Its good short field performance and ruggedness made it ideal for these operations, most often flying in and out of small grass airfields and off tidal beaches.

At 5pm on the 1st May 1964, G-AHKU Cecil John Rhodes, piloted by Captain Ron Hurcombe, entered history as the last biplane aeroplane to operate a scheduled air service in Great Britain, flying from the Isles of Scilly to Land's End. When the Isles of Scilly Rapide operations ceased, G-AHKU was the last of three Rapides remaining from the 'Islander' fleet; two aircraft at any one time flying the route, the third being serviced at the BEA facility on Jersey

Kilo Ultra was first registered as Dominie NR 722 on 14.6.46 before being taken up by the British state-owned airlines in the post-war reorganisation of Imperial Airways into two divisions; British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) operating international and Empire routes and British European Airways (BEA) operating domestic and European routes. She was withdrawn from use in May 1972.
